Many YDAC volunteers make a weekly commitment to help within YDAC's group communication programs. However, there are also opportunities for volunteers to work in other roles - inside and outside the program.

Typical volunteer roles at YDAC include, but are not limited to:

  • FACILITATORS of group conversations. Volunteers act as leaders of a group of clients to promote social links, friendship, acceptance and adapted communication skills.
Facilitators usually assist groups of three to five people with aphasia. They help clients to communicate with each other about a wide variety of topics. The volunteer applies a variety of communication strategies in these group situations.
Some facilitators also work with clients who want to re-fresh or update their basic computer skills.
  • LIFE HISTORY BOOK volunteers who develop individual communication books, working in partnership with one person or their family to record life stories and document personal information. The program team leader and the Life History Book developer work out an agreement on dates for attending the program, but much of the work can usually be done off-site.
  • VOLUNTEERS with special skills, talents or interests who can help clients to express themselves through music, art, drama, craft activities and games. The team leader and the volunteer work out an agreement on dates for attending the program.
  • GREETERS who welcome clients to the communication program each week and keep attendance.
  • RERESHMENT volunteers who help to get snacks and refreshments ready for clients each week and help to serve them.
  • SPECIAL EVENTS volunteers who work on an occasional basis to assist with special fund-raising activities, aphasia awareness campaigns or to represent YDAC at other community events.
  • NEWSLETTER volunteers who can help with production of the YDAC newsletter on an "as-needed" basis. This may include information-gathering, writing, keyboarding, editing or distribution. The YDAC newsletter TABLETALK is issued 4 times per year.
